In 2005, former attorney Marcy Miller, living in Beverly Hills, California, learned that her husband of the past 11 years was having an affair. That, and the reintroduction to dating that followed, might leave some adrift.

It left Miller with a book.

Marcy Miller’s Rebooting in Beverly Hills: A Wise and Wild Path for Navigating the Dating World [Bancroft Press] has been touted as Sex and the City for the next generation. Miller’s memoir fills the void for women who are thrust back into the dating scene and need to figure out the rules for romance and sex in the complex world of “hook ups” and “friends with benefits.”

“This book is not about meeting Mr. Right,” says Miller, currently a successful Hollywood jewelry designer. “It’s about becoming so comfortable with yourself and happy with your own life that you don’t need a man to save you or make you happy. When you reach that place and realize what you’re looking for in a mate, you’re in a ‘non-needy’ place—and only then will you be ready for a real relationship.”

As her memoir reveals, getting ready for a real relationship requires a sense of humor, perseverance, and courage. Miller openly reveals that one of her greatest challenges was regaining confidence in her body, which had been left scarred by a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery after her battle with breast cancer in 2005.

According to Bancroft Press publisher Bruce Bortz, Rebooting in Beverly Hills has already begun to find an audience in at least a dozen film and television production companies, who note the dearth of available material for the underserved audience of women 50 and up.

“I searched everywhere for answers to my dating questions,” says Miller, whose explorations included psychics, fix-ups, professional Los Angeles matchmakers, and the foreign world of Internet dating. “I found little or no help. I wanted to fill that gap with both legal and practical help for others in the same predicament—dating in this complex world.”

Bortz calls Rebooting in Beverly Hills “one of the funniest books I’ve ever published—and certainly one of the most helpful.”

Miller adds, “We all face the same challenges and harbor the same aspirations, hopes, and dreams. It is a process, often painful and lonely and depressing, but the journey is worth the effort.”
